Biography & Legacy

Wikipedia Article →

Born on August 5, 2001, in Nidani village of Jind district, Haryana, Anshu Malik is a history-making Indian freestyle wrestler who broke unprecedented global barriers in women's combat sports. Hailing from a proud family steeped in wrestling tradition—her father Dharamvir Malik was an international wrestler with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and her uncle Pawan Malik was a SAFF Games medalist—Anshu stepped onto the wrestling mats at the renowned sports nursery in Nidani at the age of eleven. Trained under the demanding tutelage of coach Jagdish Sheoran and her father, Anshu demonstrated phenomenal tactical intelligence, rapid counter-attacks, and exceptional leg defense. Her junior career was laden with international triumphs, including winning gold at the 2017 World Cadet Championships in Athens and the 2019 Asian Junior Championships in Chonburi. Transitioning effortlessly to the senior international circuit in the competitive 57 kg weight category, she claimed bronze at the 2020 Asian Championships and struck gold at the 2021 Asian Championships in Almaty. That same year, she qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, becoming one of the youngest Indian wrestlers ever to compete at the Olympiad. In October 2021, at the World Wrestling Championships in Oslo, Norway, Anshu etched her name into Indian sporting immortality by storming into the final of the 57 kg category, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler in history to reach a World Championship final and secure a historic Silver Medal. She maintained her championship momentum at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, winning another glorious Silver Medal for India. Armed with unyielding mental toughness, technical excellence, and deep pride in her Jind wrestling roots, Anshu Malik represents the fearless new vanguard of Indian Olympic wrestling, inspiring young girls across Haryana to embrace the ancient sport of wrestling and dream of global sporting podiums. Her historic feats on international mats have firmly established Jind as an elite cradle for women's freestyle wrestling. Anshu’s unrelenting work ethic, humble demeanour, and fierce sporting pride have inspired thousands of young athletes in rural Haryana to pursue Olympic dreams.
