Raised on the proud traditions of Haryanvi martial service—where his father Subedar Ramphal Singh Suhag served in the Indian Army and his grandfather was a decorated soldier in the First World War—General Suhag completed his schooling at Sainik School Chittorgarh before joining the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 1970. Commissioned into the prestigious 4th Battalion of the 5th Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force) in June 1974, he built a legendary operational career spanning more than four decades of dedicated frontline service across India's most challenging terrains. Suhag served as a Company Commander in the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) during Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, commanded the 53 Infantry Brigade engaged in intense counter-insurgency operations in the Kashmir Valley, and led the 8 Mountain Division during Operation Parakram in the high-altitude Kargil sector. Renowned among his troops for his exceptional physical fitness, strategic foresight, calm resolve under fire, and uncompromising soldier welfare ethics, he later commanded the prestigious 33 Corps in Siliguri and headed the Eastern Command as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief. As Chief of the Army Staff, General Suhag oversaw landmark modernizations of border defense infrastructure and provided resolute leadership during national security crises, including commanding the historic 2016 surgical strikes along the Line of Control against cross-border terrorist launchpads. Post-retirement, he was appointed High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Seychelles, serving with diplomatic distinction.
