Biography & Legacy

Wikipedia Article →

Kavi Jat Mehar Singh Dahiya (1918–1945), immortalized across northern India as 'Fauji Mehar Singh', was an extraordinary soldier-poet, freedom fighter, and patriotic balladeer whose stirring verses ignited the spirit of national liberation. Born in the agrarian village of Barona near Kharkhoda in Sonipat district, Mehar Singh inherited the martial and literary traditions of Haryana's countryside. He initially enlisted as a Havildar in the 4/19 Hyderabad Regiment of the British Indian Army, serving with distinction on overseas postings in Southeast Asia. When Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose issued the historic clarion call for total national independence, Mehar Singh joined the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) during World War II, dedicating his rifle, voice, and pen to the sacred cause of India's freedom. Stationed along the treacherous, disease-ridden jungles of the Burma-Assam frontline, he composed electrifying Veer Ras (heroic) raginis and patriotic soldier ballads that raised morale and stiffened the resolve of freedom fighters facing overwhelming imperial forces. His immortal compositions, including celebrated raginis like 'Desh Bhakti Ragni', 'Subhash Chandra Bose Samarpan', 'Fauji Ki Chithi', and 'Border Ragni', brilliantly fused military valor with the tender emotional landscape of rural families awaiting their sons' return. His verses captured both the roaring thunder of battle artillery and the quiet, stoic sacrifices made by mothers and wives in dusty Haryanvi villages. He reminded his listeners that dying in the defense of motherland was the supreme honor for a son of the soil. In 1945, Mehar Singh made the supreme sacrifice on the battlefield in Burma, laying down his life before witnessing the dawn of Indian independence. Posthumously honored with prestigious cultural and patriotic recognitions, Kavi Jat Mehar Singh remains an immortal dual icon in Haryana—celebrated as a valiant soldier who answered his motherland's call and as a foundational literary voice whose martial poetry continues to echo in rural community squares and military gatherings across the country.
