Biography & Legacy

Wikipedia Article →

Lala Lajpat Rai (January 28, 1865 – November 17, 1928), revered throughout the nation as 'Punjab Kesari' (The Lion of Punjab), shared a profound, foundational bond with the historic city of Hisar in Haryana, which served as the political, legal, and social crucible of his early public life. After completing his legal studies at Government College in Lahore, Rai moved to Hisar in 1886 to begin his legal practice, quickly becoming one of the most celebrated and principled advocates in the region. During his six transformative years residing in Hisar, he co-founded the Hisar Bar Association and worked tirelessly as a civic reformer, serving as an elected member and honorary secretary of the Hisar Municipal Committee. Deeply inspired by Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Rai established the Hisar chapter of the Arya Samaj, laying the cornerstone of the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) educational movement across Haryana and building orphanages and relief centers during regional famines. It was also in Hisar that Rai initiated formal nationalist political activity in Haryana by establishing the local unit of the Indian National Congress and leading a delegation of Haryanvi citizens to the annual Congress sessions in Allahabad. Moving to national politics, he formed the iconic 'Lal-Bal-Pal' triumvirate alongside Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal, spearheading the Swadeshi movement and advocating uncompromising self-reliance (Swaraj). An intellectual luminary, Rai founded the Punjab National Bank and Lakshmi Insurance Company to foster Indian financial independence, and later established the Servants of the People Society. In October 1928, while leading a massive, peaceful demonstration against the all-British Simon Commission in Lahore, he suffered fatal baton blows during a brutal police lathi charge ordered by British police officer James Scott. His immortal words—that every blow struck on his chest would be a nail in the coffin of the British Empire—came true, cementing his eternal legacy rooted in the soil of Hisar.
