Biography & Legacy

Wikipedia Article →

Born on December 9, 1825, in Rampura near Rewari, Rao Tula Ram was a valiant Yaduvanshi Ahir ruler, military strategist, and the foremost hero of the 1857 First War of Independence in Haryana. Succeeding to the chieftainship of Rewari at a young age, Rao Tula Ram was a visionary administrator who modernized local governance, promoted regional trade, maintained law and order, and constructed formidable defense fortifications. When the widespread revolt erupted against the British East India Company in May 1857, Rao Tula Ram immediately seized the opportunity to overthrow colonial rule in southwestern Haryana. He expelled British officers from Rewari, Bhoranj, and Shahjahanpur, established an independent patriotic government, and took over the treasury to raise and equip an army of over five thousand disciplined soldiers, establishing royal brass foundries for casting cannons. Recognizing that Delhi was the epicenter of the liberation movement, Rao Tula Ram sent vital cannons, gunpowder, grain, and financial reserves to Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, earning profound admiration as an indispensable ally of the uprising. On November 16, 1857, British columns commanded by Colonel Gerrard converged on Narnaul, resulting in the historic Battle of Nasibpur—one of the fiercest, bloodiest encounters of the 1857 rebellion. Leading his cavalry and artillery with exemplary courage, Rao Tula Ram's troops inflicted heavy casualties on the colonial force, killing Colonel Gerrard before facing overwhelming British reinforcements. Sensing the necessity of international military support to sustain the liberation war, Rao Tula Ram executed an audacious strategic withdrawal. Disguised, he journeyed across Rajasthan, Balochistan, and Iran, ultimately reaching Kabul in Afghanistan to negotiate military alliances with Amir Dost Mohammad Khan and diplomats of Imperial Russia. Tragically, before foreign reinforcements could be secured, he succumbed to illness in Kabul on September 23, 1863, at the age of thirty-seven. The state of Haryana commemorates his martyrdom every year on September 23 as 'Haryana Veer Diwas', celebrating his supreme patriotism and indomitable courage.
