Biography & Legacy
Wikipedia Article →Born on January 10, 1993, in Ghirai village of Hisar district, Haryana, Sweety Boora (also known as Saweety Boora) is a world-conquering Indian boxer who captured the World Championship Gold in the light heavyweight (81 kg) category. Raised in an agricultural family with a strong sporting culture—her father Mahendra Singh was a farmer and former national basketball player—Sweety initially competed as a state-level kabaddi player. However, recognizing her exceptional physical power, explosive hand speed, and natural athleticism, her father encouraged her to take up competitive boxing in 2009. Training at sports facilities in Hisar and across Haryana despite lacking modern infrastructure in her early years, she quickly emerged as an unstoppable force in the heavier weight categories. Sweety burst onto the global boxing scene in November 2014 at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Jeju, South Korea, where she won a magnificent Silver Medal in the light heavyweight division. Over the next decade, Sweety demonstrated incredible athletic longevity, mental resilience, and tactical evolution. She captured silver at the 2015 Asian Championships and bronze in 2021 before striking Gold at the 2022 Asian Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan. In March 2023, at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships held in New Delhi, Sweety achieved the crowning pinnacle of her illustrious career. In a thrilling, high-intensity final against China's Wang Lina, Sweety displayed superior footwork and crisp combination punches to claim a 4–3 victory, becoming World Champion in the 81 kg division. Conferred the Bhim Award—Haryana's highest sporting honor—Sweety Boora is married to Indian international kabaddi star Deepak Niwas Hooda, forming one of Haryana’s most celebrated power sports couples and exemplifying Haryana's golden athletic legacy across the globe with pride and determination. Demonstrating exceptional leadership and social responsibility, Sweety actively trains and sponsors underprivileged female boxers from rural communities across Haryana, providing equipment and mentorship. Her triumphant career serves as a shining testament to the supreme willpower and athletic majesty of Haryana's daughters.
