Women in Haryanvi Folklore: Sanjhi Art, Panihari Melodies & Chhuchhak Songs

While historical records frequently spotlight male Saang performers and balladeers, the domestic oral archives of Haryana have always been zealously guarded and transmitted by women. From agricultural lullabies to festive clay rituals, female expression forms the bedrock of community culture.

### The Sacred Ephemeral Art of Sanjhi During the autumn Navratri festival, young girls and women sculpt *Sanjhi*—intricate clay murals of the mother goddess mounted on whitewashed mud walls. Adorned with clay stars, hand-painted geometric patterns, and seasonal flowers, the images are worshipped daily with evening choruses before being respectfully immersed at the conclusion of the festival.

### Panihari and Wedding Ballads The daily journey to the village well (*Panghat*) gave birth to the *Panihari* genre—melodic songs addressing social life, longing, and sisterhood. Similarly, lifecycle ceremonies such as *Chhuchhak* (birth gifts), *Kuan Pujan*, and *Bhaat* (maternal wedding sponsorship) possess dedicated repertoires of verses that enforce social solidarity and maternal pride.
